Terry Kath is praised by fans and guitar greats alike for his brilliance as an absolute guitar powerhouse. Kath, who Jimi Hendrix once called his favorite guitarist, combined his polished songwriting with his soulful vocals to form Chicago Transit Authority in 1967. The band changed its name to Chicago in 1969, enjoyed worldwide success and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016. A consummate innovator, Kath created stunning, never-before-heard guitar sounds by experimenting with unorthodox guitar and amplifier configurations. His main guitar, the one he most identified with and the one that accompanied him on his way to cult status, was a highly unusual 1966 Telecaster that was completely rebuilt and covered in stickers. This Tele was a collection of highly customized modifications, including a sawed-off Tele bridge with a synchronized Strat tremolo, a humbucker neck pickup, custom body routings, an inverted control plate, custom tuners, and three wing string trees. Adorned with Pignose decals and other artfully placed stickers the guitar is now legendary in its own right and synonymous with Kath and his lasting musical legacy. In 2022, in honor of Terry Kath, the Fender Custom Shop released a replica of this legendary guitar built by masterbuilder Dennis Galuszka, faithfully detailed and in a strictly imitation edition of just 50 pieces. Furthermore, the two pickups, a hand-wound Custom Shop '67 singlecoil Tele at the bridge and a Curtis Novak Custom Terry Kath humbucker at the neck, deliver a truly fantastic sound. 100% of a piece, the four positions deliver all the Tele sounds you know and love, plus a fat lead sound at the neck position.
