When it came to designing his signature guitar, Jazz star Johnny Smith had two wishes: a fully acoustic archtop body and a floating pickup. Accordingly the “Johnny Smith” model was introduced in 1961, combining a lush L5 body with a “Super 400” neck and headstock. The mini humbucker, originally developed by Seth Lover for Epiphone, was placed at the lower end of the fretboard, while the jack socket and volume control were originally mounted on the pickguard to protect the wood. In 1969 this model disappeared from the Gibson range, but due to popular demand it was reintroduced in 1993 under the name “Le Grand.” ...and this is definitely an absolute highlight for any Jazz musician! From the Venetian cutaway to the select woods and floating pickup to the gold-colored hardware and deep dark ebony fingerboard with split block inlays made of mother-of-pearl and abalone, ...this guitar, which is also a “James Hutchins Masterlabel,” is simply a work of art and has completely disappeared from the market, especially in this “Natural” finish. The sonorous Sitka spruce top and the attractively arched back and sides made of beautifully grained figured maple create a luxurious look that could not be more beautiful. Furthermore, when you consider that this exclusive instrument is the result of meticulous craftsmanship in every detail, you can only marvel at it. Jazz sound at its finest! Very pleasant, warm, resonant and open tone, always beautifully differentiated. The perfect overall package is wonderfully rounded off by the comfortable “ES Rounded” neck profile, which makes it super comfortable to glide across the fretboard. The guitar has some age-related dark discoloration on the top, which is typical for spruce tops, especially when they have been stored in a case like this one. Otherwise, the guitar is in mint condition with no playing marks on the frets. We are therefore delighted to be able to offer you this rare and minty gem at a sensational price.
