Gibson Les Paul 84 Johnny Marr Murphy Lab Aged & Signed (2025)

To celebrate the first anniversary of the Gibson Garage in London Gibson has collaborated with Johnny Marr to release 20(!) handsigned Gibson 1984 Les Paul Customs. These 20 instruments were only available to visitors to the Gibson Garage who visited in person on February 11, 2025. All profits from the sale of this special series will be donated to the charity “Teenage Cancer Trust”. The Johnny Marr 1984 Les Paul Custom is inspired by the very guitar that the guitarist first used on the legendary “The Smiths” album “Meat to Murder” and as his main guitar in the following years as a member of The Smiths, The The, The Pretenders and The Cribs as well as on the recordings with Noel Gallagher. Johnny Marr explains of the 20 Murphy Lab replicas: "These guitars are a faithful reproduction of my beloved 1984 Gibson Les Paul that I bought in Manchester. It's the guitar I've kept ever since and used on many different records. So I was over the moon to have it reproduced for the benefit of the Teenage Cancer Trust. It's a great organization that I've been involved with for about ten years. It's a privilege to be involved in this good cause and I'm very happy to be associated with it, especially when it comes to building a fantastic Les Paul." And what a phenomenal Les Paul Custom we have here! Despite the built-in Bigsby vibrato system it weighs just 4160 grams and its medium neck profile fits perfectly in the hand. The wonderful aging of the Murphy Lab is super authentic, without huge quirks or major paint abrasion, there are countless, by no means subtle hairline cracks in the patinated, dark red finish of this sound grenade. The two Seymour Duncan Zebra humbuckers transmit the extremely resonant basic character of the guitar to the amp in the best possible way, deliver the very best PAF sounds and give you a listening experience that you really rarely experience. Fast response, fantastic sustain, growling bass, wiry mids and radiant highs! At clean amp settings the neck pickup is wonderfully warm, transparent, three-dimensional and never undifferentiated or muddy in the basses. And the humbucker on the bridge delivers rich, smacking Rock planks that are a real joy. The whole thing is spiced up with the multifacetedness of the Bigsby B5 and the option of using the push/pull pot to produce the most beautiful singlecoil tones.
