Gibson Theodore Ebony (2022)

The most talked about Gibson guitar in 2022 goes by the name of Theodore. With this unique model, the Gibson Custom Shop launches its "Archive Collection". As the name suggests, the team from Nashville is rummaging through the Gibson archives of the last 60 years for this and is turning the most interesting designs, which so far have turned into nothing, into reality. The Theodore goes back to a sketch by former chief designer Ted McCarty, who was also responsible for the design of the Explorer, SG, Flying V and Firebird. He conceived the "Theodore" (the name was of course only given to it now) in 1957 as a simple, lightweight doublecut in a characteristic tulip shape and with a single-line headstock. For the production model, the Custom Shop took a few deviations from the original drawing, such as the position of the toggle switch, to make it as musician-friendly and practical as possible. And as wildly as the design was debated, one thing no one can deny: What a brilliant instrument the Theodore is! First of all, thanks to the slim alder body, it's the lightest Gibson solidbody we know of - not even 2.9 kg on the scale. However, the powerful 50s neck brings enough swing mass to make the guitar an incredibly resonant and direct sound wonder even dry. The highlight, however, are the pickups. We would even go so far as to say that these are the best P90s we've heard from the Custom Shop so far. Crisp, direct, very fresh and wiry, yet with enough warmth for clean picking and warm blues. Simply a killer all-around guitar with rock 'n' roll punch! Add to that the collectability factor: there are only 318 of the Theodore, 106 in each of the three colors red, black and natural.
