PRS Silver Sky John Mayer Prototype (2017)

€4,990 *

Before the official factory release in 2018 five prototypes of the John Mayer Silver Sky were made, which Paul Reed Smith and John Mayer used to determine the direction of later series production. We are delighted to be able to offer you one of these special guitars today. Our specimen is three serial numbers lower than the guitar sent to Carlos Santana. We cannot definitively confirm whether it also ended up in John Mayer's hands, but it is not unlikely, especially since a handwritten "JM" is noted on the hangtag. John Mayer himself said: "It has been a dream of mine for years to design a guitar that contains some of my favorite vintage specifications, but with a modern spirit and aesthetic. After two years of study and refinement, the Silver Sky is my vision of what a reboot of the electric guitar should look and feel like." The PRS Silver Sky is an idealized version of a vintage single-oil guitar with attention to the coherence of every detail and a standout from the crowd and the past. Combining Mayer and Smith's favorite elements of instruments from 1963 and 1964 with an eye for modern references it offers the warmth and familiarity of an old guitar with the finesse of a brand new instrument. Special features include the headstock shape, tuners, pickups, and neck and fingerboard design. The headstock shape is based on PRS' trademark but has been inverted to accommodate Mayer's playing style and maintain a consistent string length behind the saddle to optimize intonation. The "635 JM" singlecoils are extremely round and full with a musical high end that never sounds shrill. The perfect John Mayer combination of fatness and bell-like quality. You don't often hear such a thick, yet differentiated sound. "Gravity", "Vultures" or "Slow Dancing in a Burning Room" are exactly the sounds that immediately come to mind. The guitar's playability is also excellent thanks to the stronger "635 JM" neck shape and a rosewood fingerboard that has been subtly modified at the shoulders so that it feels "rounder" in the hand (7.25'' fingerboard radius). The prototype that we can offer you here in a classy black gloss finish was played extensively by the previous owner, as evidenced by a few small marks in the varnish. There are also minimal signs of play on the frets, but there is certainly no reason for a refret anytime soon. So there is a touch of music history here that you definitely shouldn't miss.
